Monocular Cues

When you look at a picture of a scene, you can imagine (and basically see) the different distances of the different objects even though it's just a two dimensional image. Did you ever wonder how this is possible? Well, it's all thanks to our monocular cues. There are so many different ways that we can perceive depth even just by looking at a two dimensional image. One way is known as relative height, which means that the higher up in our visual field, the farther away that part of the image is. Another way is known as texture-gradient. This means that the smaller and less detailed a picture is then that part of the picture is also farther away. Also the dimmer an object is we perceive as farther away. Interposition is when we perceive something as closer because it is blocking or it is in front of another object. These are just a few ways that we can perceive distance in a two dimensional image, but there are many more.

  1. Just to add, we also use binocular clues to some extent for depth perception. Binocular clues are clues that help us perceive depth using both of our eyes. However, as your posted elaborated on, monocular clues are much more effective. The only real binocular clue we learned about that can help you is your ability to perceive depth based on the approximately 2-inch space between your eyes. Therefore, you can perceive the depth of an object better using both eyes if the object is fairly close to your face. But since most objects are not right in front of your face, monocular clues are generally more helpful for depth perception.
