The Oedipus Complex
Freud is a moron. Honestly, I can't put it any other way. He may have been a revolutionary, maybe he made some innovations in psychology, but the dude was a complete moron! Freud claims that when we are children we are sexually attracted to our mothers. Because of this attraction, we develop a hatred for our fathers because they are sexually involved with our mothers. Freud goes on to explain that the reason we eventually become close to our fathers is because we realize that hating them won't do anything, so we figure that if we can't beat them, we should join them. So, to sum it up, Freud says that we want to have sex with our mothers, but since our dads are already doing just that we must find a way to either hate them or become closer with them as a means of coping. Honestly, what is this theory? Where is Freud getting this from? Why does he assume that babies are attracted to their mothers? Some of his ideas are acceptable, but this one is simply outrageous!
