I recently saw some interesting news regarding stuttering and the brain that I thought I would share. According to a recent study, many children with stuttering problems have been found to have low brain matter in areas of the brain that deal with creating speech and sound formation. For a number of years, researchers have been comparing MRI scans of different individuals with stuttering and have realized that there is a significant structural difference in the brain matter of such individuals compared to the brains of their non-stuttering peers. This information helps scientists to better understand the more complex functioning of the brain regarding the origins and formation of speech and language. However, scientists still aren't sure whether this lack of brain matter originates from birth or is acquired over time, because they only studied children who had known, diagnosed cases of stuttering, and due to the fact that this condition takes a few years to fully present itself and develop, all the individuals studied had had the condition for a number of years.
The researchers found that, along with significantly less brain matter in certain areas, the interior frontal gyrus was abnormally developed. This is very interesting to note, because that part of the brain controls important articular movement, such as translating what the brain knows about how language and sound works, and then creating speech sounds and movements. This information leads researchers to conclude that this issue deals with a speech/ motor control problem.
I thought this was interesting to share because we have been discussing parts of the brain lately, and what the functions of different areas of the brain are. We learned what parts of the brain control speech and movement, where sounds come from, and what areas help people understand language and communicate fluently. With this important background knowledge, this issue makes actual sense, and now has more of a sense of relevance and interest since we now have an idea what it is talking about.
