The Bio-Psycho-Social and All That
We discussed in class what the Bio-Psycho-Social approach is and why is it significant to get an accurate picture of a person and their situation. This is actually something I always wondered about on my own, and now that we're actually learning about it, so many things have finally "clicked" in my head. I always wondered how people were evaluated, and if they were only evaluated based on a single aspect, i.e. their social characteristics. If this were the case, I thought, then the whole evaluation process would be unfair, biased, inaccurate, and unhelpful. There are so many other significant factors and major aspects that make up a person that by just evaluating them by this alone would not paint a clear picture at all. In fact, only evalutating a person based on one aspect of their lives could even skew the examiner's opinions in the completely wrong direction, and then the evaluation would be more harm than good. In order to really help someone, it is necessary to get a basic, yet thorough grasp of who they are and what makes them that way, and that is only possible through the Bio-Psycho-Social approach.

ReplyDeleteEmma that's super true. Its really helpful to understand how psychology works. This helps me understand a little bit about how psychologist work. Appose to them just sitting in a chair and staring at someone and listen to them talk they are actually using scientific knowledge to understand someone. Although it will take more for me to trust or like psychologists. :)
ReplyDeleteEmma, I just want to add on to what you said. You said that you have found yourself wondering how people are evaluated. Did you mean by other people or by psychologists? If you mean by psychologists, then taking this class will give you a much better understanding of how official evaluations (IEPs and such) work. If you were talking about other people, then this becomes a bridge into the topic of "judgement." Judging people by their outer appearance is quite common in our era and should probably fall under the social part of bio-psycho-social. It will be interesting to see how we evaluate other people after taking this course and being exposed to the bio-psycho-social approach on a regular basis. We will have to follow up at the end of the year and see.
ReplyDeleteEmma- this was an idea that spoke to me as well. I think it's scary that sometimes people can really misread people by just looking at one factor (although it is true). I'm sure it's something that happens more often than we even realize: think about all the times we could have seen something we disliked in a person and jumped to a conclusion without looking at the whole picture - how sad!
