hello my dear fellow classmates,
so today we learned about mood disorders such as depression and bipolar disorder. In the beginning of this chapter we learned about labeling and that when we see that one small thing is wrong with a person we will only look at them through that lens and find all their other aspects of personality to confirm that they are symptoms of their "abnormality" as well.
I actually find it really funny because this phenomenon sort of happened today after we learned about bipolar disorders. My dear friend kept diagnosing people and kept saying: "you are manic because you are doing x or y." Although it was a little bit different since the other classmate clearly doesnt have ANY symptoms it was funny how she was labeling her and trying to find certain characteristics of the other person in order to show that she is manic!
oh psychology, it applies to our life and lives all around us!

  1. Carmit,
This is very true and reminds how we always say people are bipolar or OCD, etc when they really are not. Yes, people like you and I might have a little OCD in certain areas but that doesn't mean we are actually OCD. Labeling can be kind of dangerous because it can lead to someone feeling insecure or vulnerable. I also feel a lot more relieved now that we learned about the scale and how it is perfectly normal to go through times when you are sad, anxious, etc.
