I know a girl who is a transgender, so she is now a boy. She felt that she was born a man stuck in a woman's body, and that was not what she was mean to be. Does this mean she was born with a lot of testosterone and was meant to be a man? She says that she was born this way, so I believe that it is not something she inherited from the environment, but there are those who might. For example, gay people might not be born gay, rather, they see that it is a trend in society and begin to feel that they are gay. Do you think all people who feel that they are meant to be the opposite gender or gay are born this way, or do they inherit it from their environment? Or, do you think it could be the effect of both?

Gender develompent
Today in class we talked about genders and their differences. We discussed how nature and nurture both play significant roles in each gender. For example, there is a socially acceptable way for everything to be, like boys wearing blue and girls wearing pink. Boys will play with cars and girls will play with dolls. Children develop all of this and put it into schemas of how they are supposed live their lives according to what they see in the world around them. We also talked about how some girls might have more testosterone than they should, so they have male characteristics. They might be strong and therefore, they play sports because they are good at them. They might become tomboyish because they play sports and realize that they are good at them, or they might have the desire to play sports, even if they are noit so tomboyish, and become that way by hanging out with their friends who play sports with them. Some people are born with these traits and some acquire them from their environments.

I think people are born that way, especially for transgenders. I don't believe that we live in a society where being gay is accepted by everyone, and certainly not transgenders. Most people do not think highly of transgenders. I have wondered though- are transgenders people who were gay and ashamed of it so they had their sexes changed? How can you feel like a man? To me it makes no sense. I don't think that it can be nature though, because although some parents will support their gay children, most don't encourage them to be, and hope that they will be.
ReplyDeleteAlthough we try to be accepting, I personally am not a fan of transgenders. I honestly do not how to approach your question, as even psychologists argue as to whether or not people are born gay or are raised gay.
zahava literally stole what i was going to say. beautifully said zed. i completely agree with you. But i just want to add on to our opinion with another argument. Think about it, when you were in elementary or middle school and you first develop your little innocent crush on that cute boy with curly hair sitting next to you, did you just say to yourself: im going to like you know because youre a boy and im a girl? Or did those little butterflies come naturally to you? I think that gays just naturally develop those feelings for their same sex just like you naturally developed attraction and emotion for the opposite gender. In addition, although gays, lesbians and transsexuals are more accepted in our societies than years ago( not including the scandalous Greek and Roman society in history we all know too well..)their life is definitely not as peachy as "regular" people. Why would you chose a life in which you must constantly deal with judgement and overcome obstacles if you really didnt feel the way you did.
ReplyDeleteexactly carmit! Like this girl who I was talking about..she has been through so much in her life, and if she could feel that she is okay being a girl, she would have ended trying to be a boy because people tormented her so much, but she stuck with what she felt was right. It might be weird and a lot of people don't accept it because it is not normal, but some people really do feel this way and can't help it.
ReplyDeleteI think that it all depends. Sometimes people are born this way, and it is not their fault since they cannot change their nature and who they are attracted to. Other times, people just want to try out new things and therefore become gay or so, or other factors in the environment might have caused them to become gay, like when one gets betrayed by a woman over and over again and realizes that gay men are much nicer. Like all the other things in life, there are many factors that can be the result of how people become.
ReplyDeleteI agree more with Sharon. I do not think that G-d would create us in such a way. I think it is mainly due to environment. Maybe it is the way his parents raised him (or didn't raise him!) or the TV he watched as a child. Or maybe he went through an emotional experience and, as a result, took a different path. I do not think G-d would create us like this especially after learning about relationships (etc) in our Chumash class.
ReplyDeleteBut we also learn that G-d gives free will. During class sometimes I ask, "Well, if G-d does not want us to do something, why doesn't He just not make us that way?" People immediately go on and an on about free will. So we are given the choice to be gay or straight...
ReplyDeleteWe're given free will which is why people do choose this way in life, but again what about those who obviously did not ask for this kind of lifestyle when it causes trouble for them?
