Hello my dearfellow classmates,
so this week we are leaning about intelligence.
Gardener recently claimed taht intelligence comes in many diffrenet ways. Even if you score low on an IQ test you can still be considered intelligent. Although many people would state that Michael Jordan isnt intelligent unless he scored highly on the IQ test, theyre assumptions are inccorect. According to Gardener Michael jordan is actually highly intelligent, just in a very different way than the intelligent test tests. I am inclined to agree withz him. Michael Jordan is definitely a genius since he can play basketball better than alsmost anyone we know! My question is the following: Why do you think that so many people incorrectly assume that there is only a certain type of intelligence(mostly school intelligence)? Do you think its fair and accurate to emasure someones inteliigence based on an IQ test? If not, why do we do it?

  1. I think that when one thinks of an IQ test it has come to be known as a test that would test only school smarts rather than street smarts or other types of intelligence. Since most people assume this and do not necessarily learn about intelligence or research the subject, they will keep their idea of what it really is. However, we have learned this past week that there is so much more to intelligence than just how high one's level of education might be. Since these tests are continuously given because they are able to produce similar results among many people, they are probably going to continue to give these tests. I think that there is defnitely no way to test every single person's intelligence through one test, but the IQ test in general still has some significance.

  2. Carmit this is an excellent question. I loved learning that there really are so many other types of intelligence than just school smarts. Sometimes people think that school is what determines how you will be the rest of your life. Many people think if I don't get into a good college then I will not get a good job and then I'll be poor, and the list goes on and on. However, there are so many different areas where a person can shine, either athletically, socially, etc. On Friday we learned that there are social/emotional/creative intelligence tests but many people don't look at them as real tests...YET. In a 21st century environment social/emotional skills need to be taught. You cannot just teach math because there is more to life then computing. Currently intelligence tests are IQ tests, and this may be the reason why people only think of intelligent as school smart. However, as we learned, in the next 15 or 20 years there very well may be a shift to emotional and social intelligence tests which is very exciting!!

  3. Interesting questions.
I think that in most cases we view people as intelligent or not based on their academic intelligence. I think that we might do this because it is what is valued now- being school smart, getting into a good college, and making money and a name for yourself in the work world. I don't believe this was always the case. There was once a time where someone could be said to be smart in terms of their academics and still others who were not academically smart, but socially and emotionally intelligent. For instance, before women went to school (which yes, I know, wasn't good and it's great that we go to school now!) a man could be academically smart, but women who were smart were thought to be socially intelligent and things along those lines. People paid more attention to those different types of intelligence. Before the world became obsesses with making money and gaining fame, it could be that people didn't only care about academic smarts. But now, it is what most people focus on.
